We put up the Christmas tree (the first one James has ever seen), and now I have some cute photos of the cats snuggled under it! The little devils have already pulled off a few ornaments, of course, and I'm sure they're going to knock it down while we're out of town for the holidays. April is going to come with me, since she needs her pill every day, but the boys will be on their own. April is mostly the chief instigator of trouble, so at least she won't be egging the others on or beating them up while we're gone.
We trimmed the cats' claws the other day, and James had it done for the first time. He took it surprisingly well, and got his treats afterward like they all do. Then we trimmed Smokey's, and James seemed pretty content. Then we trimmed April's, and she screams like a banshee as her claws are trimmed, which clearly frightened James, and then we did super-growly Pepper and poor James ran and hid! It was the angry noises the others made that seemed to disturb James the most. I really don't know why April puts up such a fuss, because I don't think it's hurting her -- she just seems to be a drama queen. On the plus side, she doesn't try to attack us like Pepper does when he gets his claws done; she just shrieks.
Stan photographed a cat eating at the outdoor feeder today, and I *think* it's James' mama. Have to look at the larger images to be sure. We still haven't seen Spencer :( One or more cats (and a raccoon) have definitely been eating recently, as you can see footprints in the snow and the food disappears, but maybe it's only Mama Feral who's been around.

The weather makes me rage. On Tuesday, James had a vet appointment scheduled for 5:00, and it takes about 10-12 minutes to get there, so I had him in his carrier by 4:45 and waited for Stan to pick us up (for those who don't know, I don't drive). Much time passed, but no Stan. At 5:10, I went outside to shovel snow in order to burn off steam and kill time.
He arrived at 5:30 and was all apologetic about how slow he'd been because the roads were so bad. He said "I left right at 5:00", and I replied "Why the hell did you leave at 5 for a 5:00 appointment?!" He insisted the appointment was for 5:30, but I assured him it was not. The ridiculous thing is that I'd reminded him twice about the appointment, but he was nonchalant because supposedly his Blackberry would tell him in time. So much for that. He entered the appointment in the Blackberry's calendar when we made it last week, so it should have said 5:00.
The vet's office closes at 6:00. So we set out for the vet, and unfortunately the roads were as bad as he'd said -- there were accidents all over the place, cars were fishtailing and losing traction all around us (we had the same problems), and traffic was bumper to bumper. Traffic isn't usually this bad unless something is very wrong...I mean, we live in fucking Waterloo for Bob's sake. We arrived at about two minutes to 6, and they were already closing up shop, but fortunately they were kind enough to let us in and give James his shot. James was not a happy camper by that point, as he'd been stuck in the carrier for over an hour. When we let him out at the vet's office, the poor kitten was trembling or shivering...and that was BEFORE the needle.
The trip home was just as bad, or possibly worse. It took nearly an hour of more bumper to bumper traffic, and since we took a more major road (in the hopes that it was better than the one we'd taken before), there was even more chaos. There were out of service buses haphazardly in the road, and one unfortunate car had crumpled its hood while rear-ending a bus. Pedestrians were going faster than anyone taking car or transit.
Meanwhile, it had been snowing the whole time, so when we returned it looked like no one had shovelled. This always fills me with more rage than it should.
The moral..? There probably isn't one, but make sure your idiot spouse at least knows what time your appointment is :P
ETA: Turns out the buses were stuck on the road because they couldn't make it up the hill(s) due to ice. I should add that these are not significant hills by any means. |

James is getting adjusted to living indoors, and it's quite funny to watch him discover new things about People World that he'd never seen before. He was fascinated by cartoons on TV, and spent quite a while watching with us. He likes seeing the mouse cursor on the computer screen and drinking from the glass of water next to it. And it turns out he's a real talker, always meowing and mewing and making all sorts of noises. I'm already regretting encouraging him to climb on my lap while at the computer, as it taught him to lie on my desk, steal my water, step on my keyboard, and knock down everything in sight :]
Smokey and April are still out of sorts about his arrival, though. Smokey hides a lot and April's acting bitchy to all the other cats for no reason. She also likes to wake me up a lot for attention, which gets old fast. Only Pepper is behaving like his usual self, and I'm so proud of him for being such a good big brother. He always acted like a bratty little brother until we discovered Mitzi was terminally ill, and since then he's been kind and friendly to all his siblings...well, to everyone but Smokey. Smokey is always every cat's punching bag, although hopefully James won't pick up that habit too.
Stan had the tires changed today, and the service guys discovered that one of the car's lugnuts was severely warped by that accident we had on the way to London. Somehow we just don't have a lot of luck with lugnuts, since those are what came off the car and caused us to nearly lose the wheel on the way to Cincinnati last year!
I need to go for more walks for the sake of my health, but somehow can't make myself do it much during winter (especially when there's snow on the sidewalks). This is bad, and must be rectified. But I have a feeling it won't really be rectified :\Current Mood: tired
